The Supreme Court has ruled that states may require online retailers to collect sales taxes. After the ruling, shares of Amazon, Overstock.com, Etsy, Wayfair and other retailers fell. The ruling overturns a 1992 ruling which limited tax collection by retailers for online sales. Business Insider reports this ruling applied to all states regardless of the company having a physical presence in that state. The 5-4 ruling is widely seen as a victory for brick-and-mortar stores.
